In a pulley system, how do we tell the number of upward forces?

What are upward forces? How could you tell how many upward forces are there in a pulleysystem? How do we use the number of upward forces to help us find out what is the effrot required to overcome the load?
In a pulley the tension is only the upward force(if no contact with the ground or in other words isolated).
