Car battery charger alternator check?

i have a black and decker car battery charger and it has a built in alternator checker. I was wondering if anyone knew how to use this because i used to have a rac battery charger which i blew because i started the engine while the battery was charging.

NEVER disconnect your battery while the car is running,EVER ! some newer cars use the cars computer as the voltage regulator ,you can fry the computer,,as far as your charger goes, charge your battery, disconnnect the charger. start your car hook up
